For anyone who wants to audition for a show, here are some tips directly from Ms. Pittner:

  1. Acting auditions are open. Be prepared for that. You are auditioning from the moment you step up into the playing space. Relax and smile. We love you and want to see you do well. Be confident and poised. Do not apologize, squander time, pick at your clothes, or otherwise display anything but an honest interest in doing well.

  2. Come prepared. Memorize your piece! For the first round, you should choose a monologue that you feel showcases your abilities as an actor. Memorizing it will help your confidence!

  3. If you have a conflict with an announced audition time, please let us know as soon as possible. We will try to work with you if we can, but not at the last minute.

  4. Callbacks (if required) are cold readings and exercises.

  5. Auditioning is hard. Support each other throughout the process. Both of the shows are ensemble pieces, so demonstrating your ability to support and work well with each other is a plus! Nothing is more discouraging to your fellow students and to us than poisonous competition.

  6. However, when supporting others, try to avoid casting the show yourself. Suggesting to your friends that they are sure to get certain parts creates hopes and expectations that may not be fulfilled. Remember that the nature of casting is such that almost no one will get the part he or she wants or expects. Participate because you love the process.

  7. Casting is hard on your directors, too. We agonize over these decisions. Be gentle with us.

  8. For all studio plays (when applicable), the student director may make requests for casting, but the final decision is up to the teacher/director. So we’re clear.

  9. Also remember, your presence at all performances and every day during the last two weeks of rehearsals is MANDATORY for either show. Please check your schedule before auditioning.

  10. Finally, don't forget to have fun! This should not be a purely stressful process. Think of it as the first step toward a wonderful show!
